A Cottage for Robert & Joan

Modern Ranch Cottage Design in Texas

This 1,900-square-foot modern ranch cottage is the final of six structures on a family ranch. Designed as a quiet retreat for the couple who started it all, the home sits at the threshold between wooded edge and open pasture, drawing its character from the land around it.

We designed the cottage to feel rooted in its setting. Where the home is tucked into the trees, it feels solid and protected. As it opens toward the pasture, it becomes increasingly transparent, allowing the landscape, natural light, and long views to shape the experience inside.

A singular stone wall anchors the home, extending from forest to field. The volumes align with it, except for the rooftop lanterns, which interrupt the horizon and bring light down into the house. Material restraint, calibrated daylight, and careful orientation give the cottage a presence that feels quiet, inevitable, and deeply connected to the ranch.

The result is a modern ranch cottage that feels both intimate and expansive. It is a small home shaped by land, light, and family, designed to serve as a peaceful retreat within a larger Texas ranch compound.
