River House

Modern River House Design by Dallas Residential Architects

This 3,200-square-foot modern river house sits at the edge of a pecan-filled floodplain, designed to make a soft imprint on the land. As residential architects in Dallas, we begin each project by listening closely to the site, the client, and the way a home should live within its surroundings.

For River House, that meant designing a residence shaped by water, field, trees, and time. Rather than feeling placed on top of the land, the home was imagined as something that had settled naturally into the landscape. The volumes are arranged with intention, but they maintain a sense of looseness and ease, giving the house a relaxed, lived-in quality.

Indoor and outdoor spaces are closely connected throughout the home. Porches, screens, and covered outdoor rooms extend the living areas into the landscape, allowing the house to breathe with its surroundings. Natural light moves through the home throughout the day, while sightlines capture the open field beyond.

Material choices reinforce the home’s relationship to the land. Structural clay blocks define the wet zone of the primary bath, bringing texture, weight, and a quiet earthiness to the interior. Swing porches, shaded edges, and layered spaces create places to pause, gather, and look outward.

The result is a modern Texas river house shaped by listening, natural light, and the easy rhythm of outdoor living. It reflects our work as modern architects in Dallas, creating homes that feel grounded, open, and deeply connected to place.
